Keynote presentation: A Complex Crisis: Key Stakeholders and Issues in ASEAN’s Transboundary Haze

This speech will set out the central theme of the Masterclass. Speech will include the current state of the ASEAN transboundary haze crisis, the central stakeholders who are involved in the haze crisis and the major issues that must be considered when approaching the haze crisis

Session 1: Between the economy and the environment: palm oil, haze, and sustainability

Main topics will include: the role of palm oil in the haze criss, the legal framework surrounding palm oil production in ASEAN, the need for sustainability in palm oil production, how journalists can utilize data from the palm oil industry in covering ASEAN transboundary haze

Session 2: The politics of haze: Transboundary haze in the consequence of ASEAN regimes, institutions and culture

Main topics will include ASEAN regionalism and the politics of the environment, ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution and the role of regimes and institutional culture

Session 3: The “Crime” of Haze: Haze in the Context of human Dignity and Human Rights

Main topics include: human rights conventions, national constitutions, understandings in the regions concerning environmental rights diplomacy and how it has been described, notion of a crime and connection to statistics, the right to protection, ASEAN as potential upholder of rights and social impact of the haze. The main focus point will be the south (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore)

A discussion where questions that were provided before and during the masterclass will be addressed. Participants are encouraged to ask questions that will aid in the production of their stories and enhance the discussions from the Masterclass topic
