This masterclass aims to share experiences, challenges, good practices and perspectives on labour mobility governance, portability of social security for migrant workers, and responsible business practices that contribute to safe labour migration especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This speech lays out the central themes of the masterclass. Main topics include: public backlash and hate speech, lack of empathy and support and the failure of the state.

Session 1: Responses in origin and destination countries for greater cooperation of migrant workers in ASEAN countries

Main topics include: Health risks and access to healthcare, access to information, labour rights and access to justice, social protection and access to relief/income support, return and reintegration

Session 2: Implementation of the principles of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers

Main topics include: Trends in labour migration in the ASEAN region, public support and attitudes toward migrant workers in countries of destination in ASEAN and the way forward.

Session 3: Enhancing the contribution of labour migration to stable and inclusive growth and development in ASEAN

Main topics include: Medium and longer-term factors that will help shape labour migration in Asia (the way forward) and coordination between national legislations, policy alignment and intergovernmental collaboration platforms.

A discussion will be led by the keynote speaker where questions that were provided before and during the masterclass will be addressed. Participants are encouraged to ask questions that will aid in the production of their stories and enhance the discussions from the Masterclass topic.
