In this masterclass, participants will gain a deep insight into the issues of democracy, civil society and resistance within a Southeast Asian context. After placing the topic within the context of the media, we will look at the theoretical perspectives underlying social movements, civil resistance and protests. We will then examine the way in which art and visual culture can function as a form of resistance. Lastly, we shall examine civil society engagement with the ASEAN process, considering both the challenges and alternatives offered.
