Explore

Participants will gain a deep insight into the problem of corruption within a Southeast Asian context. After discussing the key players and issues, we will look at the underlying social and structural factors that generate corruption in Southeast Asia. We will then look at the consequences of corruption, specifically in connection with repression and authoritarianism. Having examined the nature of the problem, we turn to the solutions, considering the possibility of a Southeast Asia without corruption.

kiniacademy will be welcoming all participants and  introducing the speakers of the session. An overview of the topic will be provided along with poll results from the poll participants had taken preceding the event.

Keynote presentation: Major Players and Issues in Southeast Asian Corruption

Main topics may include: current state of corruption in Southeast Asia, the effects of corruption on press freedom, the role and responsibility of journalists in tackling corruption, the stakeholders in Southeast Asian corruption

Session 1: Looking at Corruption: Approach, Issues and the Role of Discourse

Main topics may include: what is corruption, how different academic approaches examine corruption differently (eg. political science, law, economics), how different academic approaches lead to different solutions

Session 2: Illicit Financial Flows, Political Financing, and how Corruption fuels Transnational and Cross Border Crimes in Southeast Asia

Main topics may include: Root of what allows corruption to manifest itself , Environmental crimes (Generating revenue around criminal activity, eg. poaching of wildlife, cross-border activities etc.), drug-smuggling, human trafficking

Session 3: An ASEAN Without Corruption? : Solutions To Corruption and the Way Forward in Southeast Asia

Main topics may include: historical efforts to curb corruption in Southeast Asia, anti-corruption movements, administrative reforms and public policy, challenges of implementing reforms and structural changes, the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of SEA-PAC in curbing corruption, the possibilities and challenges of the future

A discussion will be led by the keynote speaker where questions that were provided before and during the masterclass will be addressed. Participants are encouraged to ask questions that will aid in the production of their stories and enhance the discussions from the Masterclass topic.
